The GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free software meant for tasks such as photo retouching, photo manipulation, image composition, and image authoring, and is viewed by many as a rival to commercial applications like Photoshop.. The GIMP is an Open Source’s legendary application because of it’s flexibility. GIMP is straight forward with it’s features and has most of the Photoshop features but it has them under different menus and names. And the best thing about GIMP is that it can be operated in multiple operating systems while Photoshop is restricted to Windows and Mac OS.

I can say that GIMP could be as powerful as photoshop. I manipulated image using photoshop, and I was amazed because I did the same image using GIMP and they are really look the same.

" PHOTOSHOP "

” GIMP ”                                                          ” PHOTOSHOP “

How to do it in GIMP….

1. Open the image that you want to edit or manipulate.

Go to FILE and click Open as layers and then open the images you want to edit.

2.  Create your new image.

Hide the Layer of your main picture and Make a selection of the part of the image that you want to copy using the FREE SELECTION tool or the PEN tool. Right click inside the selection and go to Edit, Copy Visible.

Right click again and then go to Edit, Paste as, New Layer. Paste it as a new layer so that you can transform the selected image easily without distorting other images.

3. Transform your new image.

Do the same thing with the other Image you want to copy or paste.

4. Start to manipulate your image.

In this figure I want to remove the part of the head that was bitten, so I use PEN tool to select the part that i want to copy and paste it as a new layer.

Desaturate the image or go to Colors, and select Hue-Saturation

Select the layer of the image you want to edit/manipulate and do want you want to do with it. I’m done editing the images. Be sure to place your images accurately.

5. Making a background

Go to Layers and select New Layer or simply hit Ctrl+Shift+N and click OK. Don’t forget to rename your layers.  This will help you in finding the Layer you want to edit.

For my background, I use Gradient . If you will use Gradient in a background always choose the FG to BG(RGB), but if you will use it in Images, use FG to Transparent.

6. Flatten/Merge down the Layers to Save as an Image.

Like Photoshop ,there’s a lot of things you can do with GIMP.

Being a Trainee as a Creative Designer in 8Layer Tech is a very big opportunity for me. I can really say that I am learning many things on how to be an effective Creative Designer. My supervisor/mentor gave me a new task and that is to study about Web Designs.

I search and observe different Websites until I came up writing Tips in Web Designing for beginners like me.

18  Tips for Beginners in Web Designing:

1. The most important thing is the User must know what the site is all about.

2. The design should be appropriate to the category of your Website.

3. Use High contrast colors.

4. The design should be flexible.

5. Make the Banner attractive.

6. Choose a bold formatting with different color to the links.

7. Do not use tiny fonts/it should be readable.

8. Do not underline normal text.

9. Do not  use blinking text.

10. Do not use animated GIF.

11. Use a basic template for every page that contains links to the main section of the site.

12. Place a basic and simple search box on top of your site.

13. Avoid long pages.

14. Always set background color.

15. Make sure that your design is not boring.

16. Do not use images as background.

17. Make it easier for the user to find stuffs.

And the last..

18. Make it as simple as possible..Simple yet Appealing..

For me the design of our Website is very important, not only our Website but all  the designs of our Projects, because it says something about us and what we are in the world of Creative Designing.

Kahel OS!Cool OS!

We, in the computer world, all know that Operating System is a software that runs and manages our computer hardwares to  be able to execute applications. When I was in High School, I thought that there is only one OS existing in the Universe because everyone have the same OS and that’s Windows. When i enter college and choose to take up Computer Engineering, MAC OS X and GNU/LINUX came up to the picture, and since many of us can’t afford MAC and the LINUX is opensource which means everybody can have it, I focused on LINUX. And I learned that the development of LINUX is so fast that it’s popularity top the Microsoft.

The search about LINUX leads me to The 8Layer Technologies Inc, where I am taking up my practicum right now. The company uses their very own LINUX distro for their servers and workstations,And I was so  amazed when I first saw and browse the Kahel OS—-Desktop OS that is a Linux Distro Based from Arch Linux+GNOME. Their idea for this distro is not  just to produce another distro, but a distro that innovated on having a server and desktop OS with effortless updates of applications, a distro that will shake and blow your personal computers!….

Kahel OS emphasize  what a true community website is. No wonder why the “Enhanced Kahel OS website was one of the finalists in the 12th Philippine Web awards. So as a part of the open source community let’s support Kahel OS.

Because in Kahel OS, your Desktop will never be the same again..!
